Arcane Phantom
Arcane Phantom
"Arcane Phantom" conveys a sense of mysterious and elusive presence. It suggests an enigmatic figure or entity shrouded in secrecy and hidden knowledge, almost as if it’s a ghostly or spectral being with an aura of ancient, occult mystery.
The title of the sculpture is meant to capture what the finished sculpture means to myself (the creator) - as opposed to a description of what you are looking at like “Winged Archer”. To me, this entire sculpture is a culmination of 10+ years of practice, trial and error, cuts, burns, and mistakes. If I could show this finished work to a younger version of myself, I would never believe in a million years that I would create this. A decade ago, something like this was just an idea in my head; an impossible and elusive endeavor; An Arcane Phantom.
So, why a Winged Archer?
I have always loved the dramatic poses of ancient Greek gods - along with their subtle and detailed nuances. While I do not consider my skill anywhere near those which have inspired me, I felt that I had push myself to the next level. When I first made the rough “frame” (the final image in the gallery) I kept telling myself “If I can make this, I can make anything I can imagine!”. I knew I wanted a full-bodied human figure with winged feet like Hermes. However, I also wanted the warrior to wield a bow (which Hermes did not) So I knew I had to make a winged archer simply for the sake and enjoyment of the subject itself. I had to create my own version of Hermes!
How was it made?
The amount of pride I have for this sculpture cannot be understated! Metal sculptures exist all over the world - usually in the form of mass-produce, bronze-cast copies of a clay original. This sculpture, however, was welded from stainless steel! Every single detail was cut, shaped, ground, and finished from raw stainless steel using many tools and a plethora of self-taught techniques. A true one-of-a-kind sculpture that will last a lifetime which no one else can ever possess.
One photo in the gallery of this sculpture shows one of the feet and set of wings. This image is really important to me - it shows not only the scale, but also the intense details and subtle curves I put into it. Every single feather of each of the four wings of his sandals was formed by hammer and anvil, then ground and semi-polished. Tiny tack welds were carefully done to bond each feather and eventually blend them all together to form a seamless wing.
