“Put On Your Happy Face”
We have all done it
All of us, at some point or another, have had to put on our fake mask. Whether that’s to get through a short event, life change or to meet an expectation. For some of us it’s brief but necessary. For others, it’s a choice to act fake, to put on the smiling mask to manipulate others.
There are some that are outwardly false - doing things for others in hopes it will benefit themselves. Smiling while helping but secretly wanting payment in return. There are others that are inwardly fake - lying to themselves that they are happy with who they are, their choices or tolerating unfair conditions. They have become complacent and live a life that is not truly what they want. This sculpture is a living representation of the deteriorating effect that putting on that happy face has on all of us.
The Mask
The mask is (sometimes) a necessary poisonous object we’ve all had to use for one reason or another. However, too much reliance can turn us into a shell of who we really are. You’ll notice the mask is a stark contrast both in color and emotion from the main figure. Though the mask is powder coated bright white, it has heavy signs of distress from countless use. The zombie-like figure has become so emaciated it even has holes forming in its body. Unable to stand strong, the knees struggle to just hold it’s own weight up.
You will notice as you walk by and observe this sculpture from different angles, the mask will line up with the head perfectly making it appear that it is being worn. How many times will you wear your mask until you break? How long will you lie to yourself before you live the life you really want? Do you control your life or does the mask?
How was it made?
Metal sculptures exist all over the world - usually in the form of mass-produce, bronze-cast copies of a clay original. This sculpture, however, was welded from stainless steel! Every single detail was cut, shaped, ground, and finished from raw stainless steel using many tools and a plethora of self-taught techniques. A true one-of-a-kind sculpture that will last a lifetime which no one else can ever possess. The blackened color and texture is a natural finish from the TIG welding process. The finish is actually made by the welding machine itself. The welder leaves the sculpture glowing red hot. I wait for it to cool enough to apply oil to it in order to enhance its contrast.
You will notice some photos of the mask “in progress”. It was made from nothing more than a stainless piece of pipe, cut in half and facial features created with precise “build up” welds like it were clay! Once I was happy with it, I smoothed the welds and powder coated it pure white to look like a delicate porcelain mask. Lastly, I distressed the coating with a wire wheel to give the appears of countless uses.
The Base
The base is made of solid concrete with a wire structure inside. The structure gives the concrete strength as well as the proper height to the figure standing on top of the concrete. A custom plate is on the bottom of the base, embedded in the concrete. It has the name of the sculpture, the year it was created and my signature all hand-etched into it.
SPECS:
Weight: 20+ lbs
Height: 24” (including the base)
Concrete Base: 6” diameter x 6” height
SPECIAL NOTES/DETAILS
It will take a special and custom box/crate to ship this. Please allow time after purchased for me to build the crate and ship it out. I will keep in close contact with you!
