Meditating Monk-Monkey
MONKEYING AROUND WITH METAL
*once sold, this is a design that will never be made again*
I Love this Monk-ey! His existence is thanks to my love of tropical things and fascination with Monk/Buddhist cultures. When designing the balancing aspect, I decided to make the arms the balancing factor - monkeys typically have long and lanky arms so it worked out perfectly!
I used the form-factor of the long arms monkeys have and the fact that meditation is used to find balance in life to come up with the design of this monk-monkey meditating while he finds his balance on his tail! I even welded a mala necklace for him to really emphasize his ability to find balance.
Every single detail and curve was at some point glowing red hot from welding. There is actually very little grinding involved in this design as almost every detail was built-up using TIG welding. I very carefully and precisely added metal where I thought it should be. Using the TIG torch I would blend and move the metal around to create a seamless look.
When the sculpture was finally finished, I rubbed it down with motor oil - this seals, smooths and darkens the steel and creates a great finish and feel. The texture and color mimics more closely the hair of a monkey!
DIMENSIONS:
Width (from arm to arm): 6 inches
Length (from back of tail to finger tips ): 7.5 inches
