Balancing Bird
No Counterweights, Just Physics
Movement time: 4-5 Minutes
Description:
The Balancing Bird was a classic toy (a plastic eagle at the time) for me growing up. In fact, the cheap plastic version was the thing that made me want to start making all my balancing designs and learn how to do it! However, my solid stainless steel design relies on the entire structure itself for proper balance without the use of additional weights.
As with all my designs, this one will balance on any surface - including your finger tip! The beak tip is carefully polished to minimize friction. Balance of each one is finely hand-tuned by bending, shaping and forming both the beak and wings and takes great patience.
FINISH OPTIONS:
Sunburst “Feathered” - This finish is created by using special semi-polishing abrasives by rapidly running it across the surface of the stainless steel. This style plays beautifully with light while it balances and is extremely Eye-catching.
“Raven” Black Oxide - I use a special blackening chemical that works specifically on stainless steel. I put a layer of hot wax over that and buff it to a satin finish. This creates a very natural finish and looks like a forged piece of steel as opposed to a painted/coated material. Please note that each one will have slight variations and in bright light may look less dark.
